Urological Disease:Interstitial Cystitis

Symptoms are pain in bladder or discomfort.

Interstitial Cystitis is a chronic disease having the symptoms of frequent urination (numbers of times go to the restroom are many, 8 times or over in a day), urge to urinate (status where it is unable to stand when wanted to go to restroom, bothered with sudden urination), or pain in bladder and/or discomfort feeling.

Primary cause is still unknown and furthermore it has been considered as rare disease in Japan, but actually it is predicted that over 200,000 patients exist in Japan, and female patients are taking its majority. Symptom is similar to bladder inflammation, but this disease does not be cured even though taking anti-biotics agent orally. There is a case where symptom has detected at urinalysis, but no abnormality found. In many cases, doctor cannot identify this since symptoms are not like the one from other urological disease, bladder cancer, or nerve disease. Therefore, patients are visiting medical organization one by one asking for help.

Record the frequency of urination or urine amount per day.

It is asked that to take urination log, named as Bladder Diary, for diagnoses. Urination frequency, time/count and urine amount per one time are taken in a daily base. In case when times are over 8 times per day, amount is less 150 ml in one time, and bladder pains whenever urine stands up, interstitial cystitis are in question. Condition is that bacterial cystitis, overactive bladder, and bladder cancer are already omitted.

Primary treatment is symptom relief by oral medicine.

Bladder pressure dilation is effective as treatment, but effect is just the temporary one. For oral medicine, there is no specific medicine available at this moment of time in Japan, but there are few symptom relief medicines available. It is anyway recommended to receive the specialized treatment.
