The 1st Tokushukai International Symposium on Regenerative Medicine (RegeMed Kamakura)

Organizer's Greeting

Shinichi Higashiue
Organizer, Tokushukai International Symposium on Regenerative Medicine Chairman, Tokushukai Association (Ippan Shadan Hojin Tokushukai)
On the Occasion of the International Symposium on Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is attracting significant attention as a new form of treatment capable of achieving curative therapies that were impossible with conventional medicine. Research progress has been remarkable, encompassing treatments utilizing pluripotent stem cells (iPS cells, ES cells) and mesenchymal stem cells, as well as methods applying genetic technology, and its scope of application is expanding daily. Regenerative medicine is now lighting a beacon of hope even for previously intractable diseases, such as vascular regeneration therapy for severe lower limb ischemia, regeneration of cardiomyocytes for heart failure, and central nervous (spinal cord) regeneration.

The development of this field not only involves advancements in medical science but also poses new questions regarding our views on life and ethics. The ultimate challenge of regenerating life necessitates a high degree of ethics and deep understanding of humanity. We in the medical profession must approach this unknown territory with the humility and integrity of human nature alongside the development of scientific technology.

At today's international symposium, researchers and clinicians at the forefront of regenerative medicine from around the world have gathered together. I sincerely hope that the exchanges and discussions here will generate new insights and serve as a major catalyst for promoting the safe and reliable clinical application of regenerative medicine. I hope that this completely new field of medical treatment, regenerative medicine, will become a blessing for the health and happiness of many people.

Director's Greeting

Shuzo Kobayashi
Senior Managing Director, Tokushukai Medical Corporation
Director, Shonan Kamakura General Hospital

It is my great honor, as the Chairman of the Executive Committee, to offer a welcoming address at the opening of the "1st Tokushukai International Regenerative Medicine Symposium."

This symposium was conceived as an international platform for academic exchange, designed to merge the clinical expertise that the Tokushukai Group has cultivated over many years with the cutting-edge research environment of Shonan Kamakura General Hospital and the Shonan Health Innovation Park (Shonan iPark), thereby communicating new possibilities in regenerative medicine to the world.

Regenerative medicine is currently undergoing a major transformation, moving beyond the traditional medical goal of "curing disease" to one of "regenerating function and restoring health." Shonan Kamakura General Hospital has long been dedicated to this field, engaging in a consistent effort from basic research to translational research, aiming for the clinical application of vascular regeneration using stem cells.

While the application of regenerative medicine in clinical settings is progressing, there is an ongoing demand to establish regulatory frameworks and overcome ethical challenges for its industrialization and social implementation. This symposium was planned to discuss these very issues from an international perspective and to propel future development; I have been privileged to assist in its execution.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to the Tokushukai Group, Shonan Kamakura General Hospital, Shonan iPark, and all involved parties for their support and cooperation in holding this symposium. We believe that regenerative medicine will contribute even further to the improvement of people's health and welfare, and we sincerely hope that this conference marks a significant step toward that goal.

Chairman's Greeting

Takayuki Asahara
M.D., Ph.D. Chairman, The 1st Tokushukai International Symposium on Regenerative Medicine Shonan Kamakura General Hospital Deputy Director, Shonan Advanced Medical Research Institute Director, Department of Regenerative Medicine Development and Research Director, TIMC TOKYO

I would like to offer a few words of greeting on the occasion of the "1st Tokushukai International Symposium on Regenerative Medicine."

This symposium was planned as an international forum for academic exchange, integrating the clinical strength that the Tokushukai Group has cultivated over many years with the cutting-edge research environment of Shonan Kamakura General Hospital and Shonan Health Innovation Park (Shonan iPark), to disseminate the new potential of regenerative medicine to the world.

Regenerative medicine is undergoing a major shift, moving beyond the traditional medical goal of "curing diseases" to one of "regenerating function and restoring health." Among its various fields, research into vascular regeneration is a critical area that forms the foundation for organ regeneration and tissue repair, and I have consistently pursued this, from basic research to translational research aimed at clinical application. While the application of regenerative medicine is advancing in clinical settings, institutional development for industrialization and social implementation, as well as overcoming ethical challenges, are now required. In this symposium, we will discuss these issues from an international perspective and strive to connect them to future development.

Many researchers, clinicians, and corporate stakeholders leading the field of regenerative medicine, both domestic and international, are participating in this conference. I hope that through cross-disciplinary discussions, we can share concrete strategies for translating research outcomes into clinical practice and industry. Furthermore, this will be a valuable opportunity for young researchers to broaden their international perspective. We welcome new ideas and challenges, and I hope that many collaborations will be born from this venue, as we join hands to build the future of regenerative medicine.

Finally, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Tokushukai Group, Shonan Kamakura General Hospital, Shonan iPark, and all those involved for their support and cooperation in holding this symposium. Believing that regenerative medicine will further contribute to the improvement of human health and welfare, I pray that this conference will mark a significant step forward.
